|This is Mia. She was my best chicken mom. I sold my old
Buff Orp flock (hatchery birds) but could not part
with Mia. She would take any chick-ones she hatched,
another hen’s babies, babies from the incubator, there
was always room for one more under those big wings.
One morning a neighbor’s dog came and massacred my
birds. Mia had 16 babies. She disappeared, and there
was no sign of the babies either. Finally when the sun
started to go down Mia emerged with all 16 babies. She
saved them all. In April 2008 she refused to eat and
was lethargic. April 22, 2008 I took her to the vet. He
said her prognosis was very poor. With a heavy heart, I
took her to UC Davis where they euthanized her and did
a necropsy. Mia had advanced ovarian cancer. I miss
her terribly but I am glad I spared her from suffering
a painful death. She was a very special bird. RIP my

|My name is Nacho (below). I was abandoned in Southern CA. When I showed up at
Linda's husband's business, I was so
thin that you could count every bone in my body. I moved to Roseville on December 5,
2009. My mom thinks I am part German Shepherd. My job is to guard against
predators. I am earning my keep and then some.
